Codex usage limit reached: what to check next

A fixed message count found online is less useful than your actual account, exhausted window and recovery time. Follow this sequence to identify the limit before deciding whether to wait or use an option available in your account.

Start with the account and workspace

Confirm the signed-in account, plan and workspace used by the task. Personal and team workspaces may have different usage or billing arrangements. Looking at another account's dashboard does not establish the allowance available to this session.

This tracker never needs your password, login cookies or API key. Do not submit those credentials to another site to check when a limit resets.

Identify the exhausted usage window

  1. Open the official usage dashboard and find the window that has reached its limit.
  2. In the CLI, use /status to check the remaining allowance in the active session.
  3. Check whether both five-hour and weekly limits apply. Recovery in one window may not remove another limit.
  4. Read any extra reset announcement separately. It may be scheduled rather than executed, or apply only to specified plans.

Why a few messages can still consume your allowance

According to official documentation, similar-looking tasks can consume different amounts. Model choice, context, reasoning, tool use, retrieval and caching all matter. Prompt length and message count alone are not reliable estimates.

Long tasks, repeated large context and higher-consumption modes can use allowance more quickly. Clearer task boundaries, relevant context and an appropriate model can help manage usage. They do not bypass a limit.

Review the available recovery options

You can wait for the recovery time displayed in your account. If your account offers a banked reset, review its actual conditions before using it. Eligible credit or paid options may also appear, depending on your plan; check the official page for availability, pricing and effect.

The tracker’s reset-reaction button is just a site interaction. It does not send OpenAI an account reset request. Refreshing this website, chatting or pressing that button cannot increase your Codex allowance.

The announcement says reset, but my account has not changed

Read the original announcement for plan scope, workspace scope and execution timing, and confirm your signed-in identity. A planned reset or grant of a future reset opportunity is not the same as immediate recovery for every account.

If your official usage display remains inconsistent with an announcement that should apply, keep the timestamp and non-sensitive error details and contact official support. This tracker provides public records but cannot inspect or repair your account.
